An IUD is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal (copper).

1.    Hormonal IUD: Releases a small amount of progestin (a synthetic hormone) locally into the uterus. This hormone thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize the egg. It also thins the lining of the uterus, which can make implantation of a fertilized egg less likely. Some hormonal IUDs can also prevent ovulation.

2.    Non hormonal IUD: Contains copper wrapped around the stem of the T-shaped device. The copper is toxic to sperm, preventing them from fertilizing an egg. Additionally, the presence of copper may affect the uterine lining, making it less receptive to implantation.

Both types of IUDs are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, with a success rate of over 99%. They are also long-lasting, providing protection for several years depending on the type.

IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so it's important to use additional barrier methods (like condoms) if there's a risk of STIs.

Before scheduling an appointment for an IUD insertion, it is recommended that you consult with your GP or one of our doctors.
